Chapoutier trip + Burgundy - France - Sept. 12-21, 2006

Day 1-2

Day 1 included a late arrival to our destination due to travel delays.  We missed what was reported to be a great lunch at the winery.  But our dinner that night at Rive Gauche in Tain l'Hermitage certainly made up for it.  Day 2 had us traveling south to Chateauneuf du Pape and Avignon.

Looking to the right - the Hermitage hill:

On to Chateauneuf du Pape in the southern Rhone.  Our guide, Chapoutier business mgr. Catherine, shows us some of the very gravelly vinyards at Ch. Beaucastel:

Harvest underway at Chapoutier's La Bernardine vinyard.  Note the lack of trellising:

Headed toward the old hilltop Chateau:

Ruins of the old Chateau, reportedly destroyed in WW2:

The view from the top:

Avignon - the ancient walled papal city.  It was a bit more touristy than we like.  My camera lens protector was not opening completely on some of these pictures, thus the unfortunate shadows.

The palace in Avignon:
